Still think you won’t be a victim of Identity Theft? Remember, if you haven’t checked your credit report, you may already be a victim, and the clock is ticking for your number to be called.

Checking your credit report can show early signs of credit applied for under your name. Finding this out before the thief racks up large debt responsibilities can save you months of embarrassing phone calls, revealing confidential financial reports, and not having the money to hire a lawyer, because the identity thief already spent all your money, in another country.

Don’t be a victim, learn now how to be prepared. We offer a couple of easy-read books you can download now to stay ahead of the crime.

Identity theft – Part One

www.wisopinion.com

The meeting room at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department Training Academy was filled with law enforcement officials, many of them armed, attending a special summit. The main presenter opened with a Bible story.

Rebekah and Isaac had twin sons. Born first, Esau grew to be a hunter and was extremely hairy. The smooth-skinned Jacob was a soft spoken home-body.

As Isaac grew old, he became blind. He asked Esau one day to catch some game for a special meal so that he might bestow upon his eldest son his blessing. As Esau hunted, Rebekah and Jacob joined forces to trick Isaac. Rebekah cooked a separate meal and helped disguise Jacob with hairy arms and Esau’s clothes. Jacob presented his blind father with the meal, and Isaac, feeling a hairy body and smelling Esau’s clothing mistakenly gave his blessing and his inheritance to his youngest son. Esau returns too late from his hunt to prevent the stolen blessing that Isaac, regrettably, refuses to revoke.

Special Agent Wayne Ivey of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told those at the summit that the Old Testament account marks the first recorded case of identity theft. The Biblical anecdote demonstrates identity theft is not new; it has simply evolved into the fastest growing crime in the world…more…

Illegal immigrant sentenced for identity theft

If living in the United States illegally for 12 years wasn’t enough of a crime, Mexican citizen Leticia Sosa-Cepeda compounded her problems by committing identity theft in Cass County.

Sosa-Cepeda, who was living in Niles, faced her sentencing at Cass County Circuit Court Friday morning, and Judge Michael Dodge handed her a 180-day jail sentence with credit for 43 days served.

Sosa-Cepeda’s crime was discovered when officers with the Edwardsburg Police Department were investigating a suspected identity theft at Brothers Baking Co. in Edwardsburg.

When police questioned Sosa-Cepeda, she was unable to produce identification. She then gave officers a false name and birthdate twice. Both times there was no record of the name and birthdate.

When police threatened to arrest her for obstruction of justice, Sosa-Cepeda finally gave them her real name. It was then discovered that Sosa-Cepeda had been posing as a Maribel Rios with a false Social Security card that she had purchased on the streets of Chicago for $200.

When she was charged with this crime, she was on probation in Berrien County for welfare fraud. She had collected more than $18,000 in public assistance illegally.

Sosa-Cepeda’s son and daughter are to be deported soon, but she will be unable to be deported until she serves her sentence…more…

Imagine if your child’s credit was destroyed before they’re even old enough to have it.

“I’m very frustrated and feel violated that someone somewhere has got my child’s identity and it’s scaring me that they know about my child.”  Words from a  Brownsburg mother whose daughter was the recent victim of child identity theft.

The mother discovered from the Internal Revenue Service that someone used her 8 year old daughter’s information on their tax returns. Even though she says she always protected her daughter’s information in the past, her daughter was still victimized.

Fortunately the mother caught it before more damage could be done.

Child identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation and police are urging parents to protect their children’s future by guarding their identity and credit today.

Police say never carry your or your child’s information with you…more…

Identity Theft: It’s Not Just for Grownups

These days, we’re all aware of the dangers lurking online and at the bank — a carelessly dropped ATM receipt or a cluelessly bad password can invite identity thieves to rummage through our private data, ruining our credit for years to come.

But according to identity-theft expert Adam Levin, many parents aren’t aware that their children are just as vulnerable. Although only four percent of identity thefts involve kids, Levin says that these cases can be particularly devastating, simply because there are so many years of damage that a thief can do before the theft is discovered. All too often, a young person only finds out that her identity has been stolen when she applies for financial aid to go to college, or for a first summer job — by which time someone could have done a decade’s worth of unseen damage to her credit.

So what’s a parent to do? According to Levin, founder of Identity Theft 911 (a company that helps consumers and organizations protect themselves from identity breaches and provides fraud resolution should one occur), protecting your kids should start early — and educating them is half the battle…more…

Warcraft addict busted for identity theft, gets parents arrested

If you think your family is messed up, you might want to look at 17-year-old Trevor Miller, who used stolen credit cards to pay for his World of Warcraft obsession and accidentally led police right into his parents’ marijuana farm.

Miller and his parents live in a normal Chicago suburb in a home that’s anything but normal. Authorities say the kid somehow managed to get his hands on several stolen credit cards and used them for the sole purpose of buying in-game currency for his WoW account.

An investigation into multiple fraudulent purchases led the US Postal Inspection Service and State Attorney officials to the Miller residence. That’s when things at 843 Dunhill Drive in Buffalo Grove, Illinois got interesting.

Police entered the house with a search warrant looking for evidence that Trevor was using unauthorized credit cards, but they found something even more interesting – six marijuana plants (three in the house and three outside) that he and his parents used to make some extra money on the side. Luckily for Trevor, his criminal parents probably won’t lecture him about how it’s wrong to break the law…more…

Top 10 Tips For Avoiding Identity Theft During Business Travel

www.prweb.com

1.    According to recent reports, hotels are a favored target of hackers, leaving hotel guests at greater risk for identify theft. Check credit card statement online immediately following checkout and upon returning from a trip and review for any unauthorized charges.

2.    Do not publicize business travel plans and dates on social networking sites. Privacy settings on networks like Facebook and Twitter do not guarantee information will not be accessed by unauthorized viewers.

3.    Carry only vital items, and nothing that includes a social security number, in a wallet or purse. Pickpockets can obtain business and personal financial information, increasing the risk of identity theft.

4.    Do not carry personal documents in checked luggage where one has no control over the security of belongings.

5.    Make copies of all important documents (passport, itinerary, reservation confirmations, credit cards) and give them to trusted family and friends before leaving so that they can help contact the appropriate third parties in case a wallet and/or bags are stolen…more…

Child Identity Theft: How shady credit repair companies are

fraudpreventionunit.org

Shady, fly-by-night credit repair companies that promise fast credit score improvements (700-800 in just a couple months!) may be sinking to a new low here. It seems they’re harvesting valid but inactive Social Security numbers, many from children too young to have opened financial accounts.

They sell the numbers as “CPNs,” or “Credit Profile Numbers” (sometimes the “P” is “privacy” or “protection”). They tell their customers how to piggyback their credit on the clean CPN, which has the effect of making them appear more creditworthy. Once they burn through the credit for that number, they just purchase another one (I wonder if they use a credit card).

There are several articles on the topic all over the Internet. The Sun News out of South Carolina has a good one that explains it very well. However, there are still a few questions I have about this crime:

Am I to understand that simply calling it a “CPN” instead of a Social Security Number somehow makes this practice legal?
How are they obtaining the SSNs of all these children? Are they using a logarithim to generate the numbers, or is your Social publicly available until you turn 18?

If it is, do I have to personally go to Washington D.C. and rap my knuckles on every single noggin in Congress (and yell “Helloooo, McFly, anybody home?!” in every single ear) until this is remedied with Federal intervention?…more…
