Sony deploys identity theft coverage amid PS3 PSN Store outage

Sony Corp. this week began the enrollment process for identity theft coverage to customers of the Playstation Network and Qriocity music service following an external security breach that shut down both divisions.

The AllClear ID Plus will be available at no cost to PSN and Qriocity users for 12 months from the beginning of registration.

The program includes cyber Monitoring and surveillance, priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists, and a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user.

Customers must enter the email address used to register their PSN or Qriocity account to be sent an activation code.

Sony this week said it estimates the restoration of the Playstation Store by the end of May.

If a fraudster takes out a loan or credit card in your name, you can not complain or seek redress from the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) and the firm can continue to chase you for outstanding payments, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) today revealed.

In order to make a complaint to the ombudsman you must be ‘a customer’ or ‘potential customer’ of a firm. If you are the victim of identity theft however you may technically be neither. The FOS is therefore unable to deal with any complaints from people who feel they been unfairly treated by the firm in question.

Yet, according to the ombudsman, consumers often complain that firms continue to wrongly hold a person liable for a loan, even after it has become clear they were the victim of identity theft or mistaken identity.

Imagine getting bills for services you didn’t get when still a teen — and then finding out when you’re 18 that your credit rating is already shot.

This Rhode Island TV station found three kids who went through that brand of identity theft. They shared two other things in common: All went through Rhode Island’s foster care system, and all believe the identity thief was a family member or close friend.

The station says a congressmen, Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., plans to introduce legislation in Congress designed to protect potential victims of such crimes.
